A Comparison of Aerosol Particulate Production Between Hydrosurgery, Pressurized Pulsatile, and Bulb Syringe Lavage During Irrigation of Fracture Implants

چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Surgical site infection can occur after internal fixation of both open and closed fractures following internal fixation. Common methods of infection management include operative debridement and wound irrigation with a bulb syringe, or pressurized pulsatile lavage. The Versajet hydrosurgery tool appears to be an effective tool for debridement. Arecent study found that the Versajet tool was statistically superior at eradicating bacteria from orthopaedic fracture plates compared to bulb syringe or pressurized pulsatile lavage, but there was anecdotal evidence of aerosolized particles produced by the Versajet during plate irrigation. It was thought that these aerosolized particles may represent a potential occupational hazard to patients and operating room staff. This investigation seeks to quantify the amount and size distribution of aerosol particles created by bulb syringe, pressurized pulsatile and Versajet Hydrosurgery lavage.

Comparison of bulb syringe, pressurized pulsatile, and hydrosurgery debridement methods for removing bacteria from fracture implants.

Surgical-site infection is a common form of noscomial infection that can occur in fractures following internal fixation. Treatment of these infections has traditionally included preserving stable implants via debridement and antibiotic administration while the fracture is healing. Recent evidence indicated that this algorithm results in less-than-optimal rates of fracture union and infection er...

High-pressure pulsatile lavage irrigation of fresh intraarticular fractures: effectiveness at removing particulate matter from bone.

OBJECTIVE To determine the effectiveness of high-pressure pulsatile lavage (HPL) versus bulb syringe (BS) irrigation in removing particulate matter from metaphyseal cancellous bone. DESIGN Four grams of particulate graphite were placed in twenty distal femoral intraarticular osteotomies performed on New Zealand rabbit hind limbs. Two groups of ten specimens were then irrigated using either HP...

Prevention of Contamination During Pulsatile Lavage Irrigation (printer-friendly)

and Introduction Abstract Pulsatile lavage is a high-pressure irrigation treatment commonly used in the debridement of wounds. The risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and contaminants using high-pressure irrigation has been well documented in the literature. Projectile droplets and aerosolized fine droplets may form and spread, potentially contaminating the treatment facility and infecting...

Comparison of irrigation solutions and devices in a contaminated musculoskeletal wound survival model.

BACKGROUND There is much to learn about the effectiveness of different methods currently used for the irrigation of open wounds. The purpose of this study was to compare various approaches in a survival animal model. METHODS We used an established goat model involving the creation of a reproducible complex musculoskeletal wound followed by inoculation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (lux) bacteri...
